Fountain PalmThe Chinese Fan Palm Tree, also known as the Fountain Palm, is one of the most unique of all of the palm tree varieties. The tree is able to reach 40 feet in Florida but usually maxs out at 15 feet with a 10 to 12-foot spread. Chinese Fans can have a single straight trunk or multiple trunks with large, six-foot-long glossy leaves which have drooping tips. Specimens with multiple trunks will stay shorter than the maximum height which makes the Chinese fan palm suitable as an understory planting.
The Chinese fan palm will not perform well in full sun. It is best suited for shady enviornments with dappled sunlight.
Its divided leaves have long, tapering, ribbon-like segments which gracefully sway beneath the leaves, creating an overall fountain-like effect. The petioles are armed with sharp spines. The inconspicuous flowers are hidden among the leaves and are followed by small, blue-black, olive-like fruits.
The Chinese Fan Palm Tree is recommended for Mt. Pleasant, Charleston, Kiawah SC and surrounding areas.
